Learn the difference between watch address and connected wallet.

Updated over 4 months ago

In Zerion, you have the option to add wallets either as a watch address or a connected wallet, each serving a distinct purpose. Understanding the difference between these two can help you manage your assets more effectively.

Key Takeaways

  • Watch Address: For monitoring only. No transaction capabilities. Marked by an eye icon.

  • Connected Wallet: Fully functional wallet for transactions. You hold the private key or recovery phrase.

What is a Watch Address?

A watch address is a wallet that you add to Zerion for the purpose of monitoring its activity. This could be your own wallet, or it could be someone else’s—like the address of a well-known influencer on X or a high-profile "whale" whose activity you want to keep an eye on. A watch address is a view-only wallet, which means you cannot sign transactions with it.

In Zerion, watch addresses are marked with an eye icon next to the wallet’s profile picture, making them easy to identify. When adding a watch-address, you have the choice to add it added either in your watch-list, or in My Wallets.

⚠️ Avoid adding a watch address you do not own (meaning you do not have the recovery phrase or private key associated with it) to your "My Wallets" section to prevent accidentally sending funds to a wallet you don’t control.

What is a Connected Wallet?

A connected wallet, on the other hand, is a wallet that you can use to make transactions. This means you have control over the wallet's private key or recovery phrase. A connected wallet can be:

  • A wallet you’ve created directly in Zerion

  • A wallet you've imported into Zerion using its recovery phrase

  • A hardware wallet, such as Ledger, that you've connected to Zerion

With a connected wallet, you can sign transactions and manage your assets directly from Zerion.
