When you create a new wallet in Zerion, you’ll be asked to back up a 12-word recovery phrase (also called a seed phrase). This article explains why your recovery phrase is important and how to protect it.
Why Your Recovery Phrase Matters
Your recovery phrase is the only way to restore access to your wallet if your device is lost, damaged, or if you’re unable to access the Zerion app for any reason.
It grants full control over your funds. If someone else gets hold of it, they can steal everything. That’s why securing it is absolutely critical.
🔥 Zerion never sees or stores your recovery phrase
Your wallet is fully self-custodial, only you have access. If you lose access to your wallet and don’t have your recovery phrase backed up, Zerion can’t help you recover your wallet or funds.
Secure Ways to Store Your Recovery Phrase
If you haven’t backed up your recovery phrase yet, we strongly recommend doing it now using at least one of the methods below:
Manual Backup: Write it down using pen and paper, then store it in a secure, private location, somewhere only you can access. Learn how to manually back up your recovery phrase. Learn how to manually back up your recovery phrase.
Encrypted cloud Backup: Use the Zerion mobile app to securely encrypt and back up your recovery phrase to your iCloud or Google Drive account. Learn how to set up cloud backup.
For maximum security, we recommend applying both methods.
What Not to Do
Avoid storing your recovery phrase digitally, these methods are risky and can expose your wallet to theft:
Don’t take screenshots or photos of your recovery phrase
Don’t save it in email drafts, notes apps, or on your computer
Don’t type it into untrusted devices, apps, or websites, watch out for phishing scams
Don’t share it with anyone, not even the Zerion team (we’ll never ask for it)
